I paint people, places and the stories that sit quietly within them.

Sometimes it’s a relationship or a shared glance, sometimes it’s an awkward wee moment, a familiar street or a place that holds a memory. I’m interested in the moments and places that stay with us.

Perth Theatre

Before is a collection of paintings inspired by my years working in theatre — the people, places and moments that exist just out of sight of the audience.

Before the curtain rises. Before the entrance. Before the applause.

Not all of these paintings are of Perth Theatre, but Perth felt like the right place to bring them together. For many years it was a kind of home to me — somewhere I worked, performed and spent a huge part of my life.

The theatre itself has changed completely since those days, so in many ways this exhibition is also an homage to the old Perth Theatre, and to a world that now exists mostly in memory.

The title Before has two meanings. It refers to those moments before performance — backstage, in dressing rooms, in the wings, waiting to go on — but also to a chapter of my own life before I became an artist.

These paintings look back at that world from where I am now. They are about anticipation, routine, nerves, humour, loneliness, memory — and hope too: the young dancer waiting for her own story to begin, just as so many of us once did.

a little about me

I started painting four years ago and, to be honest, I’ve become completely obsessed with it. I feel so lucky to have found my passion at last!
